Xenical ®
Xenical (Orlistat) is a weight control medication for the management ofsignificant obesity. It's licensed for weight management in 149countries. Xenical targets the absorption of fat in your body ratherthan suppressing your appetite. Dietary fats are large molecules, whichneed to be broken down by enzymes called lipases before they can beabsorbed into the body. When taken with a meal, Xenical interferes withthe activity of these enzymes. This allows about 30% of the fat eatenin the meal to pass through the gut undigested. Your body thereforecannot convert these excess calories to fatty tissue or use them as asource of energy. This will therefore help you to reduce your weight, maintain your lower weight and minimise any weight regain. Xenical is a prescription weight-control medication useful for thelong-term treatment of significant obesity. Xenical can also help toimprove risk factors, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol andhigh blood sugar which, if not treated, could lead to other diseasessuch as hypertension and diabetes.
Xenical (Orlistat) has a beneficial effect on haemoglobin A1c(HbA1c) levels, fasting plasma glucose and waist circumference inpatients with baseline HbA1c levels of 8 percent or greater.
Orlistat, in combination with diet, represents a clinicallybeneficial adjunct to anti-diabetic therapy for overweight or obesepatients with Type 2 diabetes who have inadequate glycemic control.
Also Xenical is a useful adjunctive treatment for improvingseveral cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors in obese patients andanti-diabetic therapies.
Results from different clinical trials show that weight lossinduced by Xenical® (Orlistat) can significantly reduce elevated bloodpressure in overweight people.
Since it was marketed in 1998 it has helped over 19.5 million overweight people around the world.
Xenical and adolescents
A recent study presented at the 13th European Congress on Obesity(ECO) in Prague has found that Xenical has proved significantlysuccessful in the treatment of overweight adolescents.
Professor Jean-Pierre Chanoine, the principal studyinvestigator said, recommends Xenical as a safe and effective therapyfor this important patient group.
In an unprecedented move the FDA approved Xenical for thetreatment of obese adolescents aged 12 to 16 years. It is the firstapproval of its kind for a prescription weight-loss treatment.
