Somatropin is a form of human growth hormone. Human growth hormone is important in the body for the growth of bones and muscles.
Somatropin is used to treat growth failure in children and adultswho lack natural growth hormone, and in those with chronic kidneyfailure, Noonan syndrome, Turner syndrome, and other causes. Somatropinis also used to prevent severe weight loss in people with AIDS, or totreat short bowel syndrome.
Somatropin may also be used for other purposes not listed in this medication guide.
Mimics actions of naturally occurring growth hormone to stimulatelinear and skeletal growth; increases number and size of skeletalmuscle cells; increases RBC mass and internal organ size; increasescellular protein synthesis; reduces body fat stores and lipidmobilization, and increases plasma fatty acids.
Somatrem and somatropin are man-made versions of human growth hormone.Growth hormone is naturally produced by the pituitary gland and isnecessary to stimulate growth in children. Man-made growth hormone maybe used in children who have certain conditions that cause failure togrow normally. These conditions include growth hormone deficiency(inability to produce enough growth hormone), kidney disease,Prader-Willi Syndrome (PWS), and Turner's syndrome. Growth hormone isalso used in adults to treat growth failure and to treat weight loss caused by acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS).
